James Cameron plans on basing the Avatar sequels on The Godfather

Canadian filmmaker, James Francis Cameron, said that his box office hit Avatar will get not only one, but four more sequels. Almost a decade ago in 2009, one of the most expensive films that had ever been made came out. Costing James Cameron $237 million, Cameron’s masterpiece became a box office hit. Avatar remains to be the highest grossing film worldwide, with $2.788 billion.

Although other contenders tried to go up against Cameron’s Avatar, namely Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015, earning $2.06 billion, Jurassic World which was also released in 2015, that garnered $1.67 billion, and Avengers: Infinity War, which was only released this 2018 and only earned $1.60 billion. None of the three even came close to being second. The closest runner-up was also James Cameron’s masterpiece in 1997, The Titanic, which earned $2.187 billion.

James Cameron is planning on basing the Avatar sequels from The Godfather. Cameron said that regarding the story that they are telling, he had found himself a father of five starting to think about what an Avatar story would be like if it were a family drama. What if it was The Godfather? So that is what the Avatar sequels are, it’s a generational family saga.

Cameron also said that his plans for the sequels are very different than the first film. There is still the same setting and the same respect for the ‘shock of the new.’ They still want to show their audience things that they haven’t even seen or imagined, but the story is very different. He added that the sequels are a continuation of the same characters, but what happens when warriors who are willing to go on suicide charges and leap off cliffs, what happens when they grow up and have their children. It becomes a very different story. The kids are the risk takers and change makers.
